“Despicable Me 4” this weekend added an estimated $44.7 million to its box-office sales to keep its No. 1 spot in North America for the second straight week. The animated feature from Universal (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Illumination has grossed more than $200 in the United States and Canada.
The biggest surprise was the strong debut of “Longlegs,” a horror movie about a serial killer starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe. It took second place with $22.6 million from 2,510 theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by researcher Comscore. As a result, independent distributor Neon posted its best debut weekend ever. “Longlegs” also is notable for having the strongest opening for an R-rated movie this year.
“Fly Me to the Moon” from Apple Original Films (NASDAQ:AAPL) and distributor Sony (NYSE:SONY) debuted in fifth place with $10 million for the weekend. It was behind hit movies “Inside Out 2,” in third with $20.8 million, and “A Quiet Place: Day One,” in the fourth slot with $11.8 million.
The summer has more potential blockbusters ahead. “Twisters” opens in North America on Thursday after an international rollout. On July 26, “Deadpool & Wolverine” will debut as the first Marvel (NYSE:DIS) release this summer.
Estimated ticket sales are for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
