The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reportedly plans to make some of its top podcasts subscribers-only, adding some new pressure to sign up for its digital services.
The publisher’s popular true-crime podcast Serial would move entirely behind its paywall in the plans, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Meanwhile, news-focused podcast The Daily would continue to make its three most recent episodes available to nonsubscribers, but the rest would go to subscribers only.
And though the move should apply some upward pressure to subscription revenue, NYT would continue to sell ads against the podcasts.
The NYT is expected to explore making more shows subscriber-only, according to the report.
In its last earnings report, the company noted 13.2% year-over-year growth in digital subscription revenues.
