Avangrid (NYSE:AGR) said Monday it received full federal approval for the construction and operations of the New England Wind 1 and 2 offshore projects by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
The approval will permit the construction and operation of two offshore wind energy facilities, which together will have a total capacity of up to 2,600 MW of clean, renewable energy that could power more than 900K homes each year.
The construction and operations plan for the two projects includes up to 129 wind turbine generators, up to five electric service platforms, and up to five offshore export cables transmitting electricity to onshore transmission systems in Massachusetts.
The New England Wind lease area is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 4M tons, or the equivalent of taking ~700K cars off the road each year during the lifespan of the project.
Avangrid (AGR) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners recently said they commissioned 10 turbines at the Vineyard Wind 1 project, delivering 136 MW to the Massachusetts grid, making it the largest operating offshore wind project in the U.S.
