Nippon Steel (OTCPK:NISTF) (OTCPK:NPSCY) said Wednesday that Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori plans to return to the U.S. next week to discuss its proposed acquisition of US Steel (NYSE:X).
The planned visit by Mori, the Japanese company’s key negotiator for the deal, follows trips to the U.S. in May and June.
Nippon Steel (OTCPK:NISTF) (OTCPK:NPSCY) has provided few details of Mori’s next visit, but Reuters cited an unidentified source who said the executive will travel to several states where US Steel (X) has operations and meet with local officials and workers.
US Steel (X) management has backed the takeover bid but the deal faces stiff resistance from a wide range of U.S. politicians and the United Steelworkers union.
Separately, US Steel (X) said it supports the U.S. Supreme Court’s pause of the “good neighbor” air quality rule while the plan works it way through lower courts.
Pennsylvania was one of the states affected by the rule, which requires the state to submit documentation to the Environmental Protection Agency showing how it is reducing air pollution drifting into nearby states.
