- Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is apparently receiving an observer role position on OpenAI’s board of directors, according to a report Tuesday afternoon by Bloomberg, which cited anonymous sources close to the situation.
- The position is going to Phil Schiller, a 30-year Apple veteran who currently leads the App Store and Apple Events, the report said. He is expected to start the position sometime later this year.
- The observer role will mimic the role Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), OpenAI’s biggest backer, also has on the board, meaning they can’t vote or make executive decisions.
- The move comes about one month after Apple announced its new partnership with OpenAI at WWDC. Apple is integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into iOS18.
- Apple is also in talks with other AI companies for partnerships, such as Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) for use of its Gemini chatbot.
