The U.S. Interior Department said Tuesday it approved the proposed Atlantic Shores wind farm offshore New Jersey, to be developed by a joint venture between Shell (NYSE:SHEL) and EDF Renewables.
The Atlantic Shores South project is expected to generate up to 2,800 MW of electricity, enough to power nearly 1M homes, the Interior Department said.
The approval cleared construction of 195 wind turbines as part of the project, although the JV had sought up to 200.
The project still requires an additional federal approval of its construction and operations plan, along with two state-level permits, before construction can begin.
Atlantic Shores is the ninth project approved by the Biden administration, bringing the total offshore wind generation capacity receiving approval so far to more than 13 GW.
