The U.S. and its NATO allies have pledged to provide Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities, including equipment for five Patriot systems, to defend itself against Russian attacks, Joe Biden announced at the opening of the NATO summit on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
Ukraine will receive additional Patriot batteries from the U.S., Germany, and Romania; Patriot components from the Netherlands and other partners for the operation of an additional battery; and an SAMP-T system from Italy. Patriot missiles are manufactured by Raytheon (NYSE:RTX) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT).
The U.S. and other countries also plan to provide Ukraine with dozens of tactical air defense systems in the coming months, such as NASAMS, HAWKs, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS, and Gepards.
Allies including Canada, Norway, Spain, and the U.K. will provide these systems, while other nations will provide interceptors, according to a joint statement.
“Ukraine will receive hundreds of additional interceptors over the next year,” Biden declared. “Make no mistake, Russia is failing in this war.”
Ahead of the NATO summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for more air defense systems and aircraft, including Lockheed (LMT)-made F-16s.
NATO allies’ latest commitment follows Russia biggest missile attack on Ukraine in months, which killed at least 42 people and struck a children’s hospital in Kyiv.
