AI Has Not Made Hiring Faster According to New Research

Here’s a stat that might surprise you. Despite massive investment in AI recruiting tools, hiring hasn’t gotten any faster. ManpowerGroup surveyed nearly 40,000 employers across 42 countries and found that only a third reported improved time-to-hire compared to last year. Forty-two percent said there was no change. Twenty-five percent said the process actually slowed down.

Let that sink in. Companies are spending billions on AI recruiting software. And most of them aren’t seeing results.

Why AI Recruiting Isn’t Working

The problem isn’t the technology. The technology works fine for screening resumes, scheduling interviews, and answering candidate questions. The problem is everything around the technology.

Employers said their hiring processes are hindered by a shortage of candidates with the right skills, not enough qualified candidates locally, mismatches between what candidates expect and what jobs require, and fewer applicants coming through referrals. No amount of AI fixes those fundamental supply and demand problems.

There’s also a trust issue. AI leadership in HR requires humans who understand both the technology and the human side of hiring. Most companies are still figuring out that balance.

What Actually Works in Hiring

The data suggests that entry-level hiring is the strongest growth area. Fifty-two percent of employers in manufacturing and information sectors plan to increase early career hires. But the bottleneck isn’t technology. It’s finding the right people.

Interestingly, smaller businesses are adopting AI hiring tools faster than large enterprises. Maybe because they have less bureaucracy. Maybe because they feel the pain of open positions more acutely. Either way, the early movers are learning what works and what doesn’t.

For business owners, the lesson is clear. AI recruiting tools are helpful, but they’re not magic. Focus on your employer brand, your candidate experience, and your ability to move quickly when you find the right person. That’s what actually fills positions.
