According to a recent blog post, the past four releases in the series have been Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III (2023), Black Ops 6 (2024), and Black Ops 7 (2025). Moving forward, Activision aims to offer “an absolutely unique experience each and every year.”
The recent Black Ops 7 launch in November received mixed reviews, while an underwhelming performance was evident in Europe. This comes ahead of the game’s release, at which point Treyarch Senior Director of Production Yale Miller admitted to being worried about series fatigue following back-to-back games.
Shift in Strategy
This change in strategy highlights Activision’s efforts to revitalize and refresh the series. By breaking up the Modern Warfare and Black Ops cycles, the company is essentially introducing some much-needed variety, giving fans something new and unique to look forward to each time.
It’s clear that Call of Duty is looking to expand its scope beyond its traditional Modern Warfare and Black Ops titles. We might see spin-offs, new intellectual properties, or experimental gameplay styles to spice things up.
One potential outcome of this shift in strategy could be the development of new franchises within the Call of Duty universe.
A Path Forward
By embracing this refreshed approach, Activision is signaling that Call of Duty is committed to continuous innovation, not sticking with an outdated formula that risks leading gamers away from the platform.
As fans eagerly await the next installment, one can’t help but wonder what surprises the future holds. Will Activision create something that not only shakes up expectations but repositions Call of Duty for the modern gaming landscape?
Only time will tell as Activision continues to adapt and evolve its beloved series.
