US Ad Spending Hits 12.3 Percent Growth as AI Reshapes Marketing

The Interactive Advertising Bureau just raised its full-year forecast for US ad spending. The new number is 12.3 percent year-over-year growth. That’s up from the 9.5 percent they predicted back in January. A 2.8 point revision in eight months is massive.

What’s driving the surge? Two words. AI automation.

Why AI Is Fueling the Ad Boom

Google, Meta, and Amazon already capture 56 percent of all US ad revenue. That number is going higher every year because automated campaign tools are concentrating spending on the biggest platforms. When AI manages your ad spend, it naturally gravitates toward the platforms with the most data and the best algorithms.

Microsoft just made its AI Max tool generally available for all new Search campaigns. It’s on by default. Their own tests show at least an 8 percent increase in conversions, with some advertisers seeing 13.6 percent lifts. That’s not a maybe. That’s measured results from real campaigns.

Google is doing the same thing. Starting September 1, they began automatically migrating Broad Match campaigns to AI Max. No action required from advertisers. The shift is happening whether you’re ready or not.

This is what AI strategies look like in practice. Not theoretical. Not experimental. Real tools driving real results at scale.

What This Means for Your Marketing Budget

The message from the IAB report is clear. If you’re not using AI-powered ad tools, you’re leaving money on the table. But here’s the flip side. If you only rely on AI without understanding what it’s doing, you’re handing your budget to algorithms you can’t see.

The businesses winning right now are the ones that combine AI automation with human oversight. Let the algorithms optimize bids and placements. But keep your eyes on the strategy, the creative, and the brand positioning. That’s still human work.

Social media ad spending is growing 16.5 percent. Connected TV is up 15.6 percent. Commerce media is up 13.6 percent. The opportunities are everywhere. But only for businesses that adapt to how advertising actually works in 2026.
