Google (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans to deliver an array of new generative artificial intelligence tools to student and teacher school accounts in the coming weeks and months, the tech giant announced today.
“Generative AI has the potential to help students, educators and education communities save time, create captivating learning experiences, inspire creativity and learn with confidence,” Google said. “We recently brought Gemini for Google Workspace to education communities with two new paid add-ons and announced our commitment to add more data protections for schools using Gemini, free of charge.”
In a future that looks to feature generative AI applications across a wide realm of industries, Google contends, “hands-on experience with generative AI will help prepare students for an AI-driven future.”
The Gemini web accounts for teen students will vary from market to market as different countries have varying minimum age requirements for its usage. For example, in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Canada and the UK users must be 18 or older. However, South Korean students must be 14 while in the US the minimum age is 13.
Some of the AI features will assist students in making videos, improve reading and writing skills, or even provide a Learning Coach, which is like an AI tutor.
Tools for educators will help teachers develop curriculum, provide flexibility and control for grading, and better manage assignments and student progress, to list a few.
The release dates for these various tools and add-ons can be found here.
University studies on the use of generative AI in learning stress caution but do identify some benefits.
“We all want to discourage students from using generative AI to complete assignments at the expense of learning critical skills that will impact their success in their majors and careers,” according to Cornell University.
However, it also finds that generative AI can help student efficiency, aid in studying and brainstorming, and improve writing skills.
