Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) has removed all restrictions on the Instagram and Facebook platforms for former President Trump in an effort to “ensure parity” on all political candidates leading into the November election, Axios reported on Friday.
Although Trump’s account is still subject to the same content rules as other users of the platform, his account will no longer be suspended for smaller violations of Meta policy such as posting addresses without the owner’s permission. The company retains the right, however, to block the distribution of “problematic” posts even if they don’t explicitly violate Meta’s rules.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for president on the same basis,” said Meta’s president of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, adding that, “in reaching this conclusion we also considered that these penalties were a response to extreme and extraordinary circumstances and have not had to be deployed.”
Trump’s Facebook account was reinstated in January 2023 with strict restrictions that would result in a two-year suspension if violated. According to a Meta (META) spokesperson cited by Axios, Trump’s Facebook account was the only one subject to those restrictions. However, since January 2023, Trump has not violated any of Meta’s (META) content restrictions on either Facebook or Instagram.
