Vodafone and Meta (Platforms) have collaborated on a new way to free up network capacity for all mobile customers in 11 European countries, allowing them to view high-quality short videos, without noticeably compromising the viewing experience.
The companies said that in an initial three-week test carried out in the U.K. in April, they recorded a meaningful reduction in network traffic for Meta applications across Vodafone’s mobile network.
Vodafone noted that it freed up additional network resources on some of its most popular 4G/5G sites so that all mobile customers at busy locations, such as shopping centers and transport hubs, benefitted.
Vodafone and Meta — which owns popular apps Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp — are open to working with all players in the ecosystem to improve the efficient use of network resources, according to the companies.
“Meta’s willingness to optimise the delivery of video for its applications leads the way for a more efficient use of existing network resources,” said Alberto Ripepi, chief network officer at Vodafone.
Ripepi added that the two companies have implemented these optimizations across Vodafone’s European markets and plan to continue collaborating to achieve additional efficiencies.
Gaya Nagarajan, vice-president of Network Engineering at Meta, said that the company was committed to collaborating with partners like Vodafone, device manufacturers, equipment vendors and the wider digital ecosystem, to push the boundaries of video optimization.
The 11 European markets, where network optimization was applied, consist of Albania, Czechia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and the U.K.
