Texas geothermal company Fervo said Tuesday that Southern California Edison (NYSE:EIX) signed power purchase agreements for power from its advanced geothermal project under construction in southwest Utah; financial terms were not disclosed.
In terms of megawatts, Fervo said the deal for 320 MW – the equivalent of the power needed for 350K homes – is the largest of its kind for any next-generation geothermal project worldwide.
Southern California already gets some power from geothermal projects that harness the heat and steam found naturally near the earth’s surface, according to Canary Media, and now it will obtain supply from Fervo’s $2B Cape Station project, which uses advanced oil and gas drilling techniques to tap heat far deeper underground.
The power will be run along high-voltage lines from Utah running through Nevada to Southern California.
