United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain met last week with the autoworker union’s executive board to discuss his deep concerns about the likelihood that President Joe Biden could defeat Donald Trump in the November presidential election, sources told Reuters.
The discussion reportedly involved analyzing what actions the union could take to protect its interests. The UAW endorsed Joe Biden in January and noted that Donald Trump was “against everything that we, as a society, uphold.”
The meeting took place before the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Saturday by an individual with an AR-style rifle. The betting markets have shown a higher probability that Donald Trump will win the election since the shooting.
The UAW is headquartered in Michigan, which is typically a battleground state in national elections.
Late last year, the UAW set up a special website where workers can sign union cards online and get in touch with organizers. Fain noted a strong early response from workers, including from manufacturing plants in the U.S. South. Automakers in the line of fire of the UAW unionization efforts include big sellers such as Toyota Motor (TM), Volkswagen AG (OTCPK:VLKAF), Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY) and Tesla (TSLA), as well as electric-vehicle upstarts like Rivian Automotive (RIVN) and Lucid Group (LCID).
