Meta’s (NASDAQ:META) Threads app has surpassed over 175 million active subscribers, Mark Zuckerberg posted on his official account on Wednesday amid reports that the company might start selling ads on the “Twitter killer” app.
Rival to Elon Musk’s X, Threads was officially launched in July last year, and within the first five days, the app saw up to 100 million sign-ups due to the initial hype. Meta in the following weeks saw Threads lose more than half of its users.
Coinciding with product changes at X, Meta capitalized on the moment and launched Threads last year in a bold move against its longtime competitor. The platform, which is identical to X with likes, followers, and a feed of posts based on user interactions, saw active users rise by nearly 25 million during the quarter.
Since launching Threads, which is linked to its popular Instagram app, Meta has introduced several features, like fact-checking and trending topics, financial incentives for high-profile influencers to post on the app, live sports scores, and messaging, among others, to improve user experience.
