Sales of Tencent’s (OTCPK:TCEHY) (OTCPK:TCTZF) new game Dungeon & Fighter Mobile more than doubled than that of the company’s best-selling title Honor of Kings on iOS in its first month in China, Bloomberg News reported, citing research from Sensor Tower.
DnF Mobile, which was released on May 21, had reportedly garnered about $270M in the 30 days since its release in China, taking the top spot in downloads and revenue among games on Apple devices in the Asian nation, the report added.
DnF Mobile — based on Tokyo-based Nexon’s (OTCPK:NEXOF) (OTCPK:NEXOY) game franchise — was expected to bring a fresh boost to Tencent’s gaming pipeline.
The game marked the biggest launch of the year for the Chinese tech giant and is being seen as the best title to bring in recurring revenue like Honor of Kings, the country’s most lucrative game, the report noted.
DnF Mobile, reportedly, had generated more than $140M in player spending in its first week of release in China.
Last week, it was reported that Tencent was removing the game from certain Android app stores as its contracts had expired.
Tencent wanted to bring the title to China even in 2020, however, that period saw a regulatory crackdown in the Asian country, which imposed new rules on internet companies. Nexon had said then that it was delaying the title to adhere to rules curbing addiction among minors.
In February, DnF Mobile received a surprise approval from Chinese regulators, and Tencent executives noted that they fast-tracked its launch after seeing positive testing results.
